Pauw Travels takes a further step in supporting the local community. With the help of our travellers we are able to build the Pauw Travels Foundation. Our heart goes to Swarnadama Padanama, a home for disabled people in Western Sri Lanka, near Negombo.
When we first arrived at the Swarnadama Padanama, we were moved by the circumstances. It is a place with 66 current residents, and a handful of employees who are not trained nor appropriately qualified. However, it is a place where they put their heart into taking care of middle-aged men and women, with severe and sometimes multiple disabilities.
It broke our hearts to see physically disabled people who can’t walk, sitting all day on the floor, in the same place where they sleep. It hurt us to see the ‘troubled’ locked up ‘behind bars’. This is totally understandable given the lack of an appropriate number in staff. In fact, there is not enough personnel to supervise everyone and they are unable to provide adequate care for the residents.
Susan has worked in the healthcare department aiding people with (multiple) disabilities and aspires to use her expertise to make improvements in the home. It is a dream of ours to find a permanent nursing staff and pay their salaries with the funds raised by the Pauw
Foundation. So that residents can get the care they deserve. Hence, the first objective of the foundation is to raise funds in order to improve the living conditions of the disabled people, train and pay the personnel and make sure they feel taken care of.
Contribution to the foundation is made automatically when you book your travel to Sri Lanka through us. A fee of 5% of every individual booking fee will be reserved for the foundation. On a yearly basis, the financial statement of the foundation will be made public in order to provide transparency. Our travellers will be able to see how the 5% they have invested in the foundation will be utilised at Swarnadama Padanama.
